Whether you're driving, because you have to or just because you want to take a trip the weather can offer you some beautiful scenery in all seasons, but it's important to remember that when you go for winter drive you take the time to be extra cautious to ensure you and everybody else on the road get where they need to go safely.

These days, most have cell phones and they can be a great tool should you need help so you might want to consider having one in your car when you go for drives. Don't forget it's important never to talk on the cell phone while you're driving since you do not want to distract yourself from everything going on around you.

To be as prepared as possible for any situation that may arise during the cold winter weather you will want to keep a bag with supplies such as an extra pair of mittens, a blanket, nonperishable food items and drinks, a snow brush, a shovel, an ice scraper, sand or kitty litter, flashlight and a first aid kit. Having these items available will help you should your car stall or you get stuck in a traffic jam.

Once you have stocked your car remember to always check before leaving for your destination that your vehicle is working properly. Always remember to double check your lights and to leave them on while you're driving in weather where visibility is minimal this will help drivers around you realize you are there.

Make sure that you have a tank full of gas in your vehicle every time you are planning a road trip regardless of how far you're planning to go. Not ensuring that your tank is fill before you leave could leave you stuck somewhere along the road on your trip.

Always look for traffic signs and be sure that you are not driving too fast. It is often suggested that if you can do so safely that you drive slower than the designated speed limit when there is poor visibility or slippery conditions on the road. Leaving yourself plenty of space between vehicles to allow you the reaction time you may need to stop an emergency is very important. Most people recommend you leave at least the length of two vehicles between you and the next car.

If you know you are coming upon a set of traffic lights or stop sign prepare yourself for the stop by gently laying on the brakes a bit sooner than you normally would, should the weather be clear. Always use extra caution in areas where pedestrians are known to be if they may have as much difficulty seeing you as you them.

If possible consider using a car safety device that links you to emergency systems such as police, fire and ambulance should you need urgent assistance. There are a number of factories and dealers that make these programs available to drivers so if you're planning on making a purchase you may want to consider this an option. Listen to the radio before leaving the house and use the advice that is being offered. Whenever possible, stay off the roads when the weather is bad.
