There is more to being an earth-friendly company than putting a recycling bin in the lunchroom. Environmental responsibility should be reflected in the interaction a business has with its customers. For example, membership cards and loyalty cards are now available in greener materials with different in-house printing options to suit the needs and abilities of the company. The change-over to greener materials may be taken in small steps, eventually reaching the 100 % recyclable and eco-friendly presentation. This will take more time for some businesses than others.
Making Changes
Membership cards come in a variety of eco-friendly levels. The most common placard sent to customers with little thought of the environment. These items are non-compostable and will sit in a landfill for years. They are made of little or no recycled material. Rather than using the regular type that is made of plastic with little or no earth-friendliness, eco-friendly companies can take baby steps toward greener placards. The items will still carry the same information, but they will not be around for quite so long. Little by little, the business can progress towards using products and innovations that are more and more environmentally responsible. The changeover can be made slowly to have a smaller financial impact on the business.
Process
Those with greener characteristics are digital or laser printing compatible. They are still convenient for the business to create and produce the membership card on-site, but are made of a larger percentage of recycled polyester material. A common amount is about 40 %. In other words, they are produced on thinner plastic material, which creates a smaller carbon footprint. They are frequently attached to a recyclable paper letter with critical information for the customer regarding the company. Using an attached card reduces the number of times they need to be run through a laser or digital membership card printing machine. Each card can be made to order in-house for each customer as they join the organization or buy a membership for services. Saving time and energy, the letter itself can be discarded in the compost pile, creating more rich nutrients for plants and gardens at the member's home.
Members
When given a choice, most consumers will opt for items made from an environmentally friendlier material; however, usability and durability are also important concepts. Membership cards and loyalty cards serve different purposes, depending on the merchant or organization. If they must be presented for admittance to a club, they should be sturdy enough for someone to use it regularly without it falling apart or the information rubbing off after a few pulls from a wallet. They may need to be scanned electronically and should hold up to frequent handling. Electronic data on a single card is greener than reproducing a paper sheet or receipt each time a customer visits, especially if this is a daily or weekly occurrence.
