More and more people all over the world are getting computer literate today. But when it comes to knowledge about hardware, most tend to throw up their hands in despair. Most computer users are totally ignorant about the assembly of the computers and often get intimidated by any small hardware problem. Though at first glance, the wiring and component assembly might look confusing and like a jig-saw puzzle, it is not so. The various components of the computer hardware are actually very easy to assemble and connect. Although the individual components of computer are of extremely advanced technology, repairing and connecting them is relatively easy.

There are many advantages of assembling one's own PC. In fact, one can build one's own computer with the help of an instruction book, purchased components and a screwdriver. One can always wonder about the need to build one's own PC as computers are available in all possible makes and prices in almost any retail store. It is true that one can get the cheapest possible computer from the market, yet for people looking for a special customization of system components for a particular purpose, building their own PC can only provide a total control over the type and quality of the components.

Although the price range of the cheapest preassembled PCs can not be matched by building your own PC, a lot of overhead costs can be saved. Moreover, there's often some catch in the very cheap computers and they are usually meant only for basic word processing and e-mail use. Hence, the home-built computer systems are a perfect blend of enhanced functionalities with lower costs due to their customized hardware installation.

Building your own PC is a great learning experience. Also an added advantage is that while building your own computer, a better and more comprehensive understanding of the working of various components can be gathered. This knowledge is very useful in case of troubleshooting as in the case of computer crashes where the problem can be identified and fixed without the help of professional service and hence expensive service bills are saved.

Although building a computer may look rosy there are a few disadvantages too. The major disadvantage in building your own PC is the loss of the external system warranty. There is no replacement for component malfunctioning and no compensation for servicing charges. Short circuit damage or any unexpected failure of the system components can be compensated under the warranty service provided for if the system is bought from a store. You could work around this problem by buying all the components for home-built computers at the same time and from the same retailer, as they can offer some warranty and compensation for damage.

Usually self built computers are of the best configuration and quality as no compromise is made on the internal components. The big retailers generally employ cheaper OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) components to lower costs, which is a compromise on the system's performance. For self assembling of computers, branded components should be considered as though they are a bit more expensive but well worth the cost for the extra performance they offer, while there is always a problem in the reliability and stability factor of OEM components in store-bought PCs.

Summing up, then, it really is better to build your own PC from the point of view of getting better components and better performance as also the fact that in putting it together, you learn a lot which helps if there's a problem with the computer later on.
