It is a common scenario for friends, families, and anyone else under the sun - what are we going to eat? Preoccupation with food is not uncommon and in this day and age when many people do not know the first thing about cooking, recipe books are replaced with binders full of restaurant advertisements.

Beyond these 'eat out all the time types' there are those that find eating in a restaurant to be a once in a while experience. Enjoying the finer things in life does not always mean having the biggest flat screen television or surround sound home theater system, it can be as simple as eating a melt in your mouth steak dinner. How to find a good restaurants can be a daunting endeavor.

For every local bistro there are ten chains clogging the real estate of strip malls and while going to a bar to eat some greasy appetizers can hit the spot much of the time, finding some place where our money is going to something better can be harder.

Most often there are local newspapers that usually write best of lists at the end of each year. These lists undoubtedly include local restaurants and are most likely voted on by those in the city. This can be an invaluable resource if you are settling in for the first time.

Zagats is another stand-by that can take you from your city to anywhere else in the country. Exhaustively researched and compiled, the Zagat's guide can be an invaluable tool when you travel from place to place and are looking to find a good place to eat.

These are only two mainstream directions. Many times it is the small restaurants, or 'hole in the wall' buildings that house some of the best food in a city and is coveted by locals. Finding places like this is usually best done by word of mouth, but what can you do to find out something like this? It is simple now that we live in a technological age.

Mobile applications allow us to connect to each other and our environment in a way we never have before. Urban Spoon is a well known application that you can download to your phone and acts as a web resource, voted on by the public, that will send you in the direction of any food you feel like eating. Looking for a good vegan cafe? With the mostly young and urban crowd that votes and helps create this food database, you'll be pointed in the right direction.

You do not have to have an application directly downloaded onto your phone to find what you need. There are more and more websites that are similar to Urban Spoon like Yelp. Yelp is city specific and breaks down cities by more than their restaurants. They look at every angle of entertainment that a city has to offer and you can find some place to eat, followed by some place to drink, and end your night the trendiest coffee bar.

No matter where you live, you have the resources to steer you in how to find a good restaurants.
