Sometimes it is hard to tell when a building's windows should be replaced. Glass is fairly durable and is often taken for granted. Improving a home's looks and energy efficiency are two reasons homeowners should invest in vinyl replacement windows. So how does someone know if it is time to replace the windows in their house?

Disrepair
When windows are cracked or broken, they should be repaired or replaced immediately. Those with worn molding and damaged frames make a home look neglected. Not only are they inefficient to heat and cold, they invite vandalism and break-ins. Those that slide up and down which are physically difficult to maneuver are prone to getting stuck. They may be painted shut. This can lead to frustration, physical injuries and broken panes. Windows with gaps and missing pieces should be replaced with up-to-date vinyl products that can save money and increase home value in the long run.

Age
Are the home's windows older than its owners? If the answer is yes, it is most likely time to replace the windows. Discolored and worn windows can give a home a rundown and dilapidated look. The panes should be clear and shiny. For those planning on selling the home within the foreseeable future, older windows will lower the home's resale value. Replacing them with vinyl models sooner rather than later allows the homeowner to enjoy them before selling the house. Relatively new vinyl replacements will increase the property value on the house and also reduce energy bills. Older windows cause higher utility bills.

Efficiency
The older a pane of glass is, the more likely it is to be a great conductor of heat. Thicker glass that sits in the sun for a prolonged period of time creates a lot of energy and produces even more heat when sunlight passes through. Older glass is thicker. Newer glass is thinner, but still allows more heat to pass through its surface. Vinyl windows are less heat conductive. Some types are so low that they are dubbed "energy efficient" by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US department of Energy (DOE). In fact, vinyl replacement windows with a low emission rating can qualify for a federal tax credit when certain requirements are met.

Style
Does the home look outdated and behind the times? Old glass windows with nine panes each on the top and bottom have been out of style for years. More in vogue are large bay windows or types with six panes each that span across two or three sections. This gives the home more sunlight and a better view of the scenic outdoors.
