When you have a research paper to write, you want to turn in your best work. For the student whose grades are not top-notch this can be a frustrating experience. How can you write a great research paper? Actually, every student can write a great paper with a bit of practice and patience. Understanding that writing research papers is a learned skill, not an inborn talent is very important. Just as you learned how to memorize your mathematical tables or the alphabet, you can learn how to write a research paper.

Do you understand the directions? Many students actually become so anxious when they receive this assignment; they skim read through them and miss critical points. Turning in a good research paper that doesn't follow the directions can cost you points, sometimes even a full letter grade simply because it doesn't meet the required directions. It is very important to read the and to ask any questions if you don't think you understand the assignment.

Quick! What is your topic? It is best to focus first on picking the topic of your paper. The smart student, no matter their grade level, buckles down and figures out what they will write about. This is because they realize the sooner this is done, the quicker they can get started on the assignment. Without a topic for the research paper, they don't have a starting point. Think about what interests you most in the class and then compare this to current events. Quite often, this is a great way to come up with a topic for your research paper.

Where are your research materials? For some papers, a teacher will require you to use only journal articles or only books or for others, you'll use both. Some directions say, "No Internet." Understand where your research materials are and then focus on getting them once you've got your topic on hand. Remember that the savvy student is always open to changing their research paper topic if they can't find good research materials. If you can't find research materials in thirty minutes, it is likely there isn't enough to support your topic available easily to do this assignment. In that case, you are far better switching topics than struggling along with the current topic.

Did you write an outline? Some students are divided on this. Some say an outline is helpful and others don't like to work with one. An outline can help you organize your thinking and notes. Other students like to think as they write. Find the system that works for you and do that. Don't force yourself to do something that isn't natural for you. An outline can be useful for your research paper as you can think about which points and what research you would like to mention where in your paper. But if this doesn't seem like a system you want to use, then don't use it.
