It's important to get help quickly because as the later you wait, the more this can affect your grades. "The early bird gets the worm," is a popular saying as it talks about the gifts of being early. This reminds us of the importance of getting to the library early for your research materials. Remember that as you have been assigned this paper, so has everyone in your class at the very same time. This means twenty to forty other students will all be looking for the same type of research materials. You'll want to get there first to check out the best possible materials.
The smart student knows the value of setting aside their finished draft for a day or so. This is also called using a first draft and polishing it up. Looking at your first draft with clean eyes means you'll see things that you didn't see earlier. Grammar, punctuation and spelling mistakes will all "pop" out at you. So will things like paragraphs that can be improved or that point you to ones that you wanted to write more effectively.
By setting your essays aside you are giving yourself a chance to look at your paper fresh and really critique it well. Another way to do this is to team up with another student and to critique each other's papers. You'll want to choose a student with good grades who is good with details and will catch mistakes. Take as good care with their paper as you would with your own.
