When writing a college essay, it helps to be very organized. Some students don't understand the power of organization. Start with the right materials. Just like with any project, you'll need all the proper materials to write a college essay. Some prefer to write notes on loose-leaf paper and others want to use their laptop. Find your own system and stick to it. Keep all of your notes in the same place. Know where your library card is. Have change for the copy machines at the library. Bring your book bag so you can take books home. All of the right materials spell "success" for you and your college essay.
Clean the clutter away from your workspace. When working on your essay, you don't need anything getting in your way. Remove any other projects and put them away in their proper places. Keep all other projects well organized so you'll be able to work on them as well. Have a clean workspace that is well lit. A comfortable chair that is ergonomic (easy to sit in and doesn't bother your back) is important for when you do your writing of your college paper.
If you are working in a college dorm you may not be able to control the noise level of the entire dorm, but you can probably do so for your own area. Play soft music like classical or jazz to keep your concentration strong. Turn the ringer on your cell phone and landline telephone off as you work. All of this clutter can cause you to lose focus as you work.. The more crap you can remove, the easier work will be.
Organize your research materials and know where to find everything. Many students wind up with exorbitant library fines because they don't keep track of when books are due back at the library for their essay assignments. Write down on a stick-note piece of paper all of your due dates and keep this posted by your desk. If you need extra time for a book or other resource, you can call or use the library's online system. Keep all of your copied journal articles in a binder or folder for easy reach. Make sure they are all labeled with the name of the journal, date and page numbers all you'll need to make these citations for your college essay. Without this information, it will be a quick scramble at the end of your assignment.
The student who thinks being organized doesn't matter is sadly mistaken. Being organized can save you time and help you to find the right resources quickly. It can help your writing of the college essay to be more effective. This can also mean you'll have time to write that so important first draft, check it over for any mistakes and then do that second draft that will be improved. That second draft technique can help any student enhance their grade, as you'll catch grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes. You'll also see ways to make the college essay better.
