Oil and Gas Industry Innovations

The oil and gas industry is constantly developing new techniques to operate more efficiently, helping both the environment and consumers.

Heating water has always consumed a lot of energy, but now hot water on demand heaters eliminate that. Storing water in a tank and keeping it at a usable temperature 24 hours a day is no longer necessary. When you turn on the spigot, the device turns on and instantly heats water to a safe temperature. It only heats the water used, saving substantial amounts of energy.

Gaslights provide security and decorative lighting at the same time and do not attract insects. They are surprisingly inexpensive to operate and continue to provide light during a power failure.

Ways to generate clean electrical power are under constant research. Zero carbon dioxide emissions is an obtainable goal. Research is being conducted on new types of natural gas fired power plants that can produce electrical power and eliminate carbon emissions. Operating at the same, or less expense as conventional techniques, these plants can provide clean electricity for many years.

Like many other businesses, storage and delivery also challenge the oil and gas industry. Natural gas can now be delivered by converting it to liquefied gas or LNG. The natural gas is cooled until it turns into a liquid. In this state it is 600 times smaller. This allows it to be shipped in special tankers, eliminating the need for pipelines in areas where they are not feasible. When the liquid natural gas reaches its destination it is converted back to its original form.

Oil water separators are a system many people have probably never thought about or heard of. Their development continues to meet higher standards and the work they do ensures quick and efficient separation of water and sand from unrefined oil as it reaches the well head in the drilling process.

The oil side of the industry has been innovative in its techniques of operation also. Storage for oil at offshore rigs can now be done using underwater tanks instead of pumping it to shore. These tanks are made to withstand storms and automatically displace any water or foreign particles without contaminating the ocean. They can receive oil from the rig and pump out to tankers at the same time.

There are numerous systems available for safely removing the water and recycling the oil. The water is then clean enough to be discharged into conventional storm drain systems.
