More oil trends seem to be focusing on horizontal drilling and deep sea drilling made possible by remote operated vehicles (ROV) to increase supply and meet this demand.

Additional Alternatives

Will natural gas and oil both be used for fuel in a car gas tank? About one decade ago, natural gas was in short supply. It was labeled as an unreliable source. However, recently it is being discovered and developed at such a rapid pace that its price has dropped to a seven year low.

Now, and for many decades, natural gas has heated half of all the homes in the United States. Lately, new power plants are choosing to use it as the prime energy to run their systems. With the price decreasing, it may become accepted as an economical alternative for cars and trucks, along with businesses over the more expensive, polluting oil.

A Trustworthy Option

Natural gas is cleaner than coal. While this already makes it a viable product to pursue, add to that the fact that there is still a 90 year supply still in the ground. If more is found through research, that number will rise.

Horizontal Drilling

Starting about 25 years ago, horizontal oil drilling technology has proven to be a highly productive and effective method to tap world-wide oil reserves. For instance, for every 20 vertically drilled holes for oil wells, only 2 or 3 holes are needed to recover the same amount. The less time and manpower it takes to recover the energy source, the more efficient it becomes.

This method lets companies to drill many ocean wells from one platform. Today, 3,000 to 4,000 horizontal oil wells are drilled yearly. The largest on record is a long site that wanders about 7 miles, off the shore of southern England called the Wytch Farm oil field.
ROVs Increase Deep Sea Drilling

Many more companies in the International Petroleum Industry are exploring the deep ocean waters for oil. Remotely operated vehicles, ROVs, once used only for studying the ocean, now are being employed by large oil companies and finding vast oil deposits.

For example, the Petrobras Brazilian oil company has discovered huge oil deposits, 4.3 miles below the Atlantic ocean surface off their coastline. These offshore Atlantic waters are too deep for divers to reach. However, ROVs can easily reach the depth necessary to begin processing potentially 64 billion barrels of oil to be brought up to the surface and made available to the world.
