Most students have had that moment when they finally found their research paper writing topic, and they head off to the library to do their research, only to find out that there is literally a million experts on the subject. As they sift through oceans of materials, they find themselves at a loss for who to quote and why. The ocean is too far and deep, so they randomly pick one.

Inevitably, the one they pick is the one that is not properly credentialed or is not accurate. Then the entire paper falls down around this poor reference. While this is an extreme case, it does happen and to varying degrees. Research paper writing depends wholly on using the correct research and resources. So how do you find the right resources for your paper and how do you know when you have found them?

When you first sit down to a research paper, you must first understand that some subjects are simply too broad. If you search and there are too many "experts" on your specific questions, then perhaps your specific question is not specific enough. Start by narrowing your topic choice to the sharpest point possible. Pick a subject and then keep narrowing it until the ocean is a small pond. That is one way to make your resource list a bit more palatable.

Even when you narrow your topic to only a small pond, however, you are still going to have plenty of so called experts. The best way to get to the right resources is to start hunting the foremost authority. This authority figure will be the main man in the field you are writing in. Perhaps they wrote a specific paper or have extraordinary credentials. Whatever the case may be, they need to be the guy that all the other experts use for their resources. What does that tell you? Start by looking at the resources that others have used in this field. If you do this, you will begin to see the same names coming up all the time. Once you see that they are being used as references, you look at their references as well. You will eventually work your way to the top dog.

Now that you have your primary expert, and you have lots of resources that back that information up, you are ready to start looking at the information and writing your paper. When you have a top expert in a field or question, even they will reference others. Those are the people that you will use to provide supporting details and references for your research paper writing. If they are good enough resources for the expert, they will be good enough for your teachers.

Now that you have narrowed the field of experts, the rest comes easy. You know who you are going to listen to and can easily get your answers. If you really want to impress with your research paper, then reach out to that expert. Let them know what you are doing and ask if they might consider a telephone conversation or an email interview. Many will gladly help you out and you will have some real hard core research paper material. Nothing is better than personal experience and at the least they will provide you with information that most do not know. That is impressive when writing a research paper at any level.
