Writing a dissertation is unlike anything you are likely to face throughout your entire academic career. Some people compare it to writing a thesis and in some ways it is similar. Like with a thesis, a dissertation usually answers a question, and involves extensive research. What sets a dissertation apart, however, is the width, breadth and scope of the dissertation. Dissertations are given as a requisite to undergraduates and it marks their movement from student to scholar. It gives them a chance to take their expertise and apply it directly in a meaningful way.

One of the hardest things about writing a dissertation is managing the various pitfalls. One of the first pitfalls that you encounter when you write a dissertation is choosing the right topic. Dissertations have to be large enough in scope to provide for enough material, but they have to be narrow enough that they are thorough.

Because the dissertation is so complicated and involved, many students find themselves burned out either from the dissertation itself, or from the many responsibilities that they have surrounding them at this busy time in their lives. Being an undergraduate student can be very stressful in and of itself, never mind adding a paper to the mix. How the undergraduate student handles the stress will have a direct bearing on the success of the dissertation and his or her undergraduate degree at large.

Another difficult part of a dissertation is that you have to work with committees and advisers. While this can be a source of great assistance and help, it can also be a source of great aggravation and frustration. The reasons for this are many and varied, and sometimes it can be over a simple clash of ideals or beliefs. Most of the committee members and advisers that you will have during a paper will also be experts and scholars in the field of your dissertation. This can lead to a bumping of the minds. How you manage the sticky situations will also affect your success on this project.

The final and most common pitfall that one runs into while writing a dissertation is a lack of passion and burn out on the subject. Regardless of how much you love something, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Dissertations demand that you take your topic and turn it completely inside out in a search for information and fresh angles. Over time, this can bring a person down mentally and cause them to experience burnout. This is one of the reasons why the time-frame is so long in writing this particular paper. There should be time to step back and smell the roses on occasion, or to simply take a break.

Overall, writing a dissertation is a very rewarding and worthwhile experience. It will often follow you and the world of academia as well as into your career in the field. Some dissertations eventually go on to be benchmarks and in the field of study. If you put in the time and the effort to write the paper of a lifetime, you can even make you rich over time. It is totally up to you how much time and effort you put into writing.
