Opinion essay writing is one of the few essays that many students actually look forward to. They are able to give their own opinions and thoughts rather than the restricting confines of a research or term paper. Still, a great many students have trouble understanding what makes a solid opinion essay. These mistakes are made time and time again, and the student is often left clueless as to why they got a bad grade until after the fact. Here is a quick look at the most common mistakes made in opinion essay writing:

The Essay is not Backed Up With Facts

These essays are not a free license to say how you feel without any support or proof. Opinion essays are meant to be reasoned arguments and opinions that are backed up with solid research. Yes, there is that research word again. If you say that you think that rattlesnakes are not venomous, you are stating an opinion. But you are wrong and your opinion holds no water when you look up the facts. If you say that rattlesnakes are only dangerous if you surprise them or mess with them and get too close, then you have a reasonable paper if you back it up with the many opinions of the experts that agree with you. There is a big difference between the two.

The Essay is Too Broad

Most essays are in danger to some degree of running off topic. When you make the title way too broad, then the focus of the article has to follow. No opinion can be proven or disproved effectively if it is watered down with information that has no bearing on the question being answered. Most opinion essays slide off track and then try to ramble back to the point. By then, the opinion essay is going to get a bad grade. Start over.

The Essay is Too Loose

By loose, we mean that the essay is written far too much like a letter rather than a paper. While these specific essays are allowed to be looser than a term paper, they should not be like a text message to your buddy either. Professional and informed is the order of the day, and a good opinion paper will leave the reader feeling as though they learned something - regardless of whether they agree with your point of view.

The Essay has Not Been Proofread

Spelling, grammar and all the usual rules do apply in an opinion essay, no matter how much you might wish they do not. Having the opinion essay read by several people will head off most of the problems with grammar and spelling. You also want them to grade your content and tell you what parts work and what parts do not. An opinion essay should be solid and sound, and make the point with clarity. If it does not, then you need a friend or loved one to point it out so you can fix it.
