Without a doubt, the toughest part of writing a college term paper is getting started. More students fail college over failing in English than for any other class, and the reason is sometimes simply because they could not get started on their term papers until the last minute. Is it possible to write a fantastic college term paper at the last minute? Sure it is. Is it likely? Not at all. It is a rare person that can wait until the weekend before a term paper is due and nail it over the weekend. You need to get started well in advance to ensure your high marks.

So what makes so many people delay? Most college students delay college papers because they quite simply want to do other things. College is a hell of a lot of fun and it is very easy to get distracted. You can get distracted by girls, guys, parties and sports to name only a few things. Then there are the challenges of college in general. Just the schoolwork alone can distract you from getting around to the term paper at the right time.

The most common reason, however, that students put off the college term paper is because they do not like to do it! Simplistic is it not? That is the cold hard facts. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to change your mind, however.

First, talk with your teacher about the topic of your research paper. Try to get them to let you do it on a subject that interests you. It is amazing how quickly you might finish a college paper that is on a subject that you are passionate about. It is human nature to want to learn about subjects that we love. Conversely, writing on a subject you abhor is sure to bring out the procrastinator in you. Work with your teacher to see what can be done so that you can get started right away.

If you have a college term paper that is forcibly being given, and you hate the subject, then it gets a bit tougher. Then you have to learn to cut out the procrastination the old fashioned way - by diving in. But how do you do that effectively?

Break down your college term paper into smaller bits. If you try to look at the job as a whole, you will be overwhelmed and more likely to procrastinate. Instead, simply look at it as little jobs that are completely independent. First begin with coming up with a topic. Set aside time to do that first. Then you can write your primary focus or thesis statement. Then you can craft the outline. Then you can do the research. Doing it in increments like this can help you to be much more productive and to finish your paper on time. You can do it if you only get started. The motivation to finish grows much faster when you are actually working and liking what you are doing.
