Bar Rags Make Clean up Easy for Bar Staff

A busy bartender is a happy bartender. The busier things are, the more money they make. The more money they make, the happier they become. The faster the pace, however, the sloppier things get. Moving swiftly to fill glasses with ice, soda, juice and other liquids creates a continual stream of splashes, spills and drips. That's not a problem, however. They just grab a trusty bar rag and wipe it up when there's a spare moment or when the puddles on top of the counter get in the way. By the end of the night, the towel is soaked. It is rinsed, wrung and hung up to dry, ready to serve another day.

The rag needs to be as durable as the bartender who uses it. The cloth should be firmly stitched on all four edges to keep it from unraveling. Frequent washing and rinsing can pull out anything but the strongest stitching. Strings and frayed edges will catch on fingers, faucets and anything with a protruding edge. Constant use and abuse from sopping up spills and cleaning up messes means the material should be strong and absorbent.

The towel at a busy establishment should wring out fairly dry. This allows it to soak up more liquid when the time comes, but more importantly, it should hang comfortably over the bartender's shoulder without getting it wet. This gives the barkeep that cool yet harried look that brings forth flirtatious customers and bigger tips.

The bar towel's material should not stain easily. A thorough and professional washing should leave it one color, which is usually white; sometimes with stripes. Coming back with stains or discoloring will swiftly send it to the trash can or to the sorry delegation of wiping up nasty messes on the floor, never to be seen again.

As the trusty towel makes its rounds from countertops to sinks to shoulders and back again, it should never shed. The rag should wipe clean, without little fibers clinging to the counter in its wake. This would make the bar look dirty, which in turn would make customers think twice about returning. Instead, the rag should be made of top quality cotton and/or terry cloth. Most establishments have a set style they rely on and use regularly. Changing types and styles does not sit well with the average bartender, who has a slightly unnatural attachment to the bar towel. It is the trusty tool that helps them keep order in chaos and comfort over their shoulder in the quiet moments of catching their breath.
